Examining NFL Key Numbers for the 2024/25 Season

NOTE: Since the NFL added a 17th regular season game for the 2021 season, we’ve adjusted all metric totals involving the 2021 season down to a 16-game total.

For years, the NFL key numbers of three and seven have gotten sacred treatment from bettors. And while they remain essential spread-betting numbers, they aren’t as important as they used to be.

David Beckham’s Inter Miami lose first ever MLS match to Los Angeles FC

David Beckham’s Inter Miami slipped to defeat in their first MLS match with a 1-0 loss at Los Angeles FC.

Miami, competing in the Eastern Conference, signed the Scotland forward Lewis Morgan from Celtic in January but the majority of their squad is made up of players who have plied their trade in America.

Women’s Super League 2021-22 previews No 6: Everton

The plan

No one at Everton is remotely shy about spelling out this season’s ambition. Champions League qualification remains the overriding aim and if this summer’s friendlies are anything to go by they have a very strong chance of fulfilling it.

Everton were slightly disappointed to finish fifth last season but optimism is high around Finch Farm, the training base they share with the men’s team. Nine new signings including the former England winger Toni Duggan, Italy’s Aurora Galli, France’s Kenza Dali and Sweden’s Anna Anvegård, Nathalie Björn and Hanna Bennison have intensified competition for places. Perhaps the most exciting newcomer is Bennison, an 18-year-old midfielder whose six-…

Pep Guardiola claims title experience is no advantage in race against Arsenal

Pep Guardiola has claimed Manchester City’s experience of winning Premier League titles counts for nothing in their battle with Arsenal and that he would rather be in the leaders’ shoes.

City trail Arsenal by eight points with a game in hand going into Saturday’s game at home to Liverpool, who beat them 1-0 in October’s reverse fixture. Four of the past five titles have been won by Guardiola’s City, who have a habit of finishing seasons strongly, whereas Arsenal last secured the league in 2004 and have no recent history of fighting for top spot.

What is the latest meeting between two football teams with perfect records?

“When Celtic and Aberdeen meet on Saturday, both will have 100% records going into the match, with seven wins from seven. Has there been a later meeting between two teams with perfect records?” tweets Mike Slattery.

Saturday’s game at Celtic Park has a simple sales pitch: The Irresistible Force v The Irresistible Force. There are few precedents for opponents both having a perfect record after seven games apiece, and in fact we couldn’t find any in the men’s game.

The best in the top four English leagues is a combined total of nine wins. On 17 September 2005, José Mourinho’s Chelsea (five wins from five) had a top-of-the-table clash at, and you’ll like this, the Valley. Alan Curbishley’s Charlton had…

The Cubs are doing their best to piss away their wildcard spot

On the morning of September 7th, life was pretty good for the Chicago Cubs. They had just, essentially, ended the San Francisco Giants season by sweeping them in three games at Wrigley, leaving San Francisco 5.5 games behind the Cubs and 2.5 games out of any wildcard spot. The Cubs meanwhile were only two games behind the Brewers for the NL Central lead and the Phillies for the wildcard lead, either resulting in home games in the Division Round. They were 23-11 in their previous 34, they had a Cy Young finalist in Justin Steele, there were fresh call-ups like Jordan Wicks who slotted right in, and contributed. It was all coming together. Yeah… whoops. The Cubs have since gone 2-7, and perhaps most galling is that five of those losses have been to the Arizona Diamondbacks, another te…

The Fun As Hell Teams: Our 2017-18 Premier League Preview, Pt. 2

My colleague Patrick Redford already laid out which Premier League clubs to watch when you’re trying to take a nap; so unless you enjoy soccer’s equivalent of eating your way through a tub of raw broccoli, steer clear of those guys (except Everton) and allow me to tell which clubs are going to be fun as hell, and thus actually worth your time. Liverpool The ’Pool Boys already had plenty of goal scorers—last season they racked up 77 goals, fourth-best in the league—but in June, they went ahead and bought Mohamed Salah from AS Roma for €35 million. The Egyptian international is dazzlingly fast and, especially when paired with Liverpool’s most lethal attacker Sadio Mane, he’s going to leave defenses in shreds. There’s also Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi, both of whom co…

Why Your Team Sucks 2014: Seattle Seahawks

Some people are fans of the Seattle Seahawks. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the Seattle Seahawks. This 2014 Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group. Your team: Seattle Seahawks Your 2013 record: 13-3. Super Bowl champions. But trust me, you can win a Super Bowl and still suck, in a more ethereal and much more irritating way. Teams that win stuff are the worst. Your coach: Pete Carroll, who oscillates between “benevolent CEO” and “paranoid sleazebucket” depending upon what day it is. I’m flummoxed. I’m gonna need him and Macklemore to get to the bottom of 9/11 so that I can render final judgment. Your quarterback: Mini-Jeter, who got divorced this offseason. NOT SO PERFECT NOW, ARE YOU?! It’s like she tried to eat him when…
